George Mathews – Counselor for Multilateral and Technical Affairs

George Mathews currently serves as the Counselor for Multilateral and Technical Affairs at UNVIE. In his last assignment, he was the Senior Political-Military Affairs officer at U.S. Embassy Amman. In this role, George managed the third largest Foreign Military Financing program in the world. George also did two rotations as a political advisor to U.S. military forces operating in northeast Syria.

Before Amman, George served as the Chief of the Political-Economic and Public Diplomacy sections at U.S. Consulate Dhahran. Prior to his assignment to Dhahran, George served as a Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. From 2011 to 2013, George served as a Political Officer in Riyadh and held both the internal and external political affairs portfolios. From 2010 to 2011, George served as an Assistant Information Officer (AIO) in Islamabad. George’s first tour in the Foreign Service was in Guatemala, where he worked in the Consular section’s NIV unit. George also worked for the State Department in Baghdad as a “3161” AIO from 2005 to 2006.

Before joining the Foreign Service, George worked for a decade as a television news producer. Most of that time was spent with CNN in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. George also worked for NBC News as a producer in their Baghdad bureau. George began his professional career as a U.S. Army Field Artillery officer. He attended Vanderbilt University on an Army ROTC scholarship and also has a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Colorado- Boulder.

George is married to Melissa Mathews, who runs a small public relations consulting firm. George and Melissa have three children.
