U.S. Statement on the Appointment of a Director General

As delivered by Ambassador Jackie Wolcott
Vienna, October 30, 2019

Thank you, Madam Chair.

The United States joins other members of this Board in congratulating Ambassador Rafael Grossi on his appointment as the next IAEA Director General. With this appointment by acclamation, Ambassador Grossi can be assured of the Board’s unified and steadfast support as Director General Amano’s successor. Thank you, Madam Chair, for your excellent stewardship in guiding this Board through the appointment process during a trying and difficult time for the Agency. We laud you for your successful efforts. I would like to add that it has been a special pleasure to get to know all of our Board colleagues, and especially the new Board members, during this process.

The United States strongly supports the IAEA in all aspects of its mission and stands ready to assist the next Director General in ensuring that the Agency is prepared to meet the growing challenges of the 21st century. Under the leadership of Director General Amano and his predecessors, the IAEA has emerged as a premier international institution. Building on this strong foundation, we are confident that the next Director General will help member states guide and shape the Agency of the future.

The United States would like to assure incoming Director General Rafael and all Member States that we will continue to support the IAEA’s missions and will do our part to ensure that the IAEA is able to fulfill its mandates. We are committed to the success of this Agency and are confident in its future leadership.

Finally, please allow me to acknowledge our colleague, Acting Director General Cornel Feruta. The United States holds Acting Director General Feruta in high regard and commends him for his dedication to the Agency. We look forward to continuing to work with him for many years to come.

Thank you, Madam Chair.
