IAEA Director General Election

Election of Director General Yukiya Amano

July 3, 2009

Special Session of the IAEA Board of Governors U.S. Statement

Delivered by Geoffrey Pyatt, Chargé d’Affaires, a.i.

The United States joins other members of this Board in warmly congratulating Ambassador Yukiya Amano of Japan on his appointment as the next IAEA Director General. With this appointment by acclamation, Ambassador Amano can be assured of the Board’s unified and steadfast support as Director General ElBaradei’s successor.

The United States strongly supports the IAEA in all aspects of its mission and stands ready to assist the next Director General in ensuring that the Agency is prepared to meet the growing challenges of the 21st century. Under the leadership of Director General ElBaradei and his predecessors, the IAEA has emerged as a premier international institution. Building on this strong foundation, we are confident that the next Director General will help member states guide and shape the Agency of the future.

The United States would like to assure the next Director General that we will continue to do our part to ensure that the IAEA has the resources and authorities to fulfill its mandate. We are committed to the success of this Agency and are confident in its future leadership. We are indebted to you Madame Chairwoman for your role in achieving this result.

Finally, please allow me to also acknowledge our colleague and friend, South African Governor Abdul Minty. The United States has the highest regard for Governor Minty and for his strong commitment to this Agency and to the non-proliferation regime, a commitment attested by his candidacy for Director General. We look forward to continuing to work with Governor Minty for many years to come.
