Statement by the U.S. Mission Spokesperson following the July 25 IAEA Board of Governors Meeting
July 25, 2019
The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors met today in Vienna to pay tribute to the Agency’s late Director General Yukiya Amano and discuss procedures for the appointment of the next Director General. The Board also designated Mr. Cornel Feruta as Acting Director General of the Agency, with full executive authority.
On behalf of the United States, Ambassador Wolcott emphasized our delegation’s strong preference to act as quickly as possible to name a permanent Director General, and encouraged the Board not to preclude the possibility that Member States do so by the end of the Agency’s September General Conference.
In these sad and extraordinary circumstances, the United States reiterates its support for the International Atomic Energy Agency and continues to have full confidence in the Agency’s ability to professionally and independently carry out its important mandate around the world.
