Statement by the U.S. Mission Spokesperson on the Special IAEA Board of Governors Meeting Agenda Item 1: Verification and Monitoring in Iran in light of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015)
July 10, 2019
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In the past ten days, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano twice reported that Iran has taken actions to expand its nuclear program beyond key limits the IAEA is entrusted to verify. The United States requested today’s special meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors because we believe meeting to discuss reports on such deeply concerning actions is one of the Board’s fundamental responsibilities. The Board cannot remain silent on a matter so essential to the IAEA’s verification role.
In today’s meeting, Board Members expressed their concern that Iran is expanding its proliferation-sensitive nuclear activities. Many joined the United States in calling on Iran to reverse recent efforts to advance its enrichment program. The Board spoke with one voice in expressing full support for the IAEA’s continued professional and independent verification and monitoring of Iran’s nuclear commitments and obligations.
