U.S. and Turkey Celebrate Strong Nuclear Test Ban Partnership

On September 6 U.S. Ambassador Glyn Davies and Turkish Ambassador Tomur Bayer marked the 60th anniversary of the Belbasi Nuclear Test Monitoring Center.

Established in 1951, the Belbasi Nuclear Test Monitoring Center was the first non-U.S. seismic station supported by the U.S. Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC).

The U.S. and Turkey jointly operate the station, which is part of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization’s International Monitoring System.

To mark the occasion, senior technical experts Robert Kemerait of the United States and Nurcan Özel of Turkey exchanged American and Turkish flags flown over Belbasi and AFTAC.  The United States and Turkey are proud of their important and strong partnership.
