Howard Solomon, a career Senior Foreign Service Officer, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serves as Deputy Chief of Mission/Deputy Permanent Representative at the U.S. Mission to International Organizations in Vienna, Austria. Prior to that he was Director for the Office of Western European Affairs and served as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Europe and the European Union.
Solomon was Acting Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister Counselor for Multilateral Economic and Political Affairs at the U.S. Mission to the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland. He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania. Other assignments include a detail to the National Security Council Staff as Director for Russian Affairs, Senior Political Officer for the Office of Russian Affairs at Department of State, and four tours at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia. Solomon’s previous assignments also include Seoul, Republic of Korea and the U.S. Mission to the International Organizations in Vienna. He holds a Ph.D. in Russian literature and is a veteran U.S. Information Agency Exhibit Guide for “Design U.S.A.,” which toured the former Soviet Union.
