IAEA Board of Governors Meeting, Agenda Item 2: Applications for Membership of the Agency

U.S. statement as delivered by Chargé d’Affaires Louis L. Bono
Vienna, Austria

Thank you Madam Chair,

The United States is pleased to join consensus in welcoming the application of Saint Christopher and Nevis to be a new Member State of the Agency. We encourage Saint Kitts and Nevis to submit its instrument of ratification of the IAEA Statute at its earliest convenience in order to take full advantage of the benefits of IAEA membership, both in the area of peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology and in achieving the high standards of safety, security, and safeguards that make those applications possible. In particular, this new status should enable Saint Kitts and Nevis to implement the safeguards required by the Non-Proliferation Treaty, as well as an Additional Protocol. We are confident that the Secretariat will offer whatever assistance Saint Kitts and Nevis may need both to implement safeguards and to realize the benefits of IAEA membership, and we stand ready to offer our own assistance in that regard.

Thank you, Madam Chair.
